Will we work more in group training in the new year, at the side of a personal trainer or at free weights? Yanre Fitness reveals what will be popular in 2021 in terms of fitness, according to an expert survey.
The ” Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends ” was published for the 14th time . This is based on a worldwide survey of experts by US sports universities and associations on the subject of fitness trends. Wearables were able to defend their top position, and the long-running hit HIIT went up one place again.
Table of Contents
Yanre Fitness presents the top ten in the ranking.
It is also known as “Wearable Technology”. Fitness gadgets such as sports watches, pedometers , heart rate monitors or glasses with an integrated GPS device land in the trends ranking after 3rd place in 2018 and 1st place in the previous year for 2021 again. The market, in which companies like Apple, Misfit, Garmin, Samsung, Basis and Jawbone have put a lot of research in recent years, dominates the fitness trends 2021.
HIIT (high-intensity interval training) still took first place in the ranking in 2018, slipped to the “bronze rank” last year and climbed back to second place this year. Interesting: HIIT has been in the top 5 since 2014! According to those responsible for the study, since 2008 HIIT has been a popular and effective way of achieving rapid fitness success with professionals, such as personal trainers and competitive athletes. Despite the warning of increasing risk of injury, HIIT has now reached gyms around the world – and is extremely popular.
#3: Group Training
With at least five participants and one instructing person, the investigators speak of “group training”. The specific sporting discipline is not defined, it can be anything from spinning to aerobics to dance short. Granted, group training has always existed – but their appeal and impact are unbroken, making them one of the most important trends in the fitness industry in 2021.
#4: Exercise With Free Weights
In previous studies, there was a category called “strength training”. But because it was found to be too broad, it has now been replaced by free weight training. The jury of experts is certain that this trend belongs to fourth place for 2021.
#5: Personal Training
Personal training is by no means reserved for wealthy beginners! Even those who have been going to the gym for a long time are no longer afraid to invest in support for the right, professional execution. That should be more worthwhile today than it used to be. As those responsible for the survey explain, legislation has been adapted in recent years to ensure that personal trainers employed in health and fitness centers are well trained. This was rewarded by the experts: for personal training, it went from 8th place to 5th place.
#6: Exercise is Medicine
Exercise is Medicine (EIM) is a global health initiative that aims to get general practitioners and other healthcare providers to give a physical activity assessment every time they visit a patient. This should then result in treatment recommendations in order to make the patient more active again.
#7: Bodyweight Training
Bodyweight training, i.e. training with your own body weight , is not in vogue for no reason: You don’t need any equipment, just your own muscle strength, and the intensity can be varied without any problems. It first appeared in the Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends in 2013. According to the survey heads, it is now becoming increasingly popular because of marketing measures by gyms and health clubs .
#8: Senior Fitness Programs
As the 2018 Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends showed, retired people are better trained today than they were a few years ago. Life expectancy is increasing worldwide – one factor is sport. On average, older people attach more importance to health than before and can also afford what makes the whole thing attractive for commercial providers.
#9: Health and Wellness Coaching
This newcomer in the top 10 (last year in 11th place) is about the trend to integrate behavioral science into health programs. Health and wellness coaching focuses on 1: 1 care, sometimes a concrete wellness goal is formulated and tackled in small groups – using strategies that are intended to change behavior.
#10: Employing Certified Fitness Trainers
Official courses by trained and experienced fitness professionals such as sports scientists, for example in certified sports and health centers, are particularly popular in the new year, according to the survey. Here, more emphasis should be placed on quality.
