What are the types of custom weightlifting belts?

There are four main types of weightlifting belts. Namely:

  • Bodybuilding belts
  • Powerlifting belts
  • Velcro belts
  • Dipping belts

A Bodybuilding belt:

A bodybuilding belt falls somewhere between a powerlifting & velcro belt. It is also called an Olympic weightlifting belt.

These belts are mostly made of leather. They apply more pressure to the abdomen than velcro belts.

A bodybuilding belt is thicker on the outside than the inside. The buckle has two prongs for a more secure fit.

A Powerlifting belt:

This belt is used by powerlifters. It is firmer than all other weightlifting belts. Because of this, it applies more pressure to the abdomen as well.

The width of this belt is the same all around. Allowing more surface area to be in contact with the abdomen.

A Velcro belt:

A Dipping belt:

A dipping belt is made of leather or synthetic material like neoprene. What makes it different from others is the chain attached to the front of it.

The chain is connected to the belt with heavy-duty carabiners. A weight plate is added to the chain, while performing bench presses, pull-ups, chin-ups, etc.

Most dip belts have a weight capacity of approximately 200 pounds.

These belts need to be wide all around. This provides core support & keeps the weight distribution even.

What is a custom weightlifting belt made of?

There are two types of materials used for custom weightlifting belts. These are:

  • Leather weightlifting belts
  • Nylon weightlifting belts

Leather weightlifting belts:

Custom leather weightlifting belts are made of either:

  • Top-grain leather
  • Suede leather

These weightlifting belts are shaped like a cone, cylinder, or are contoured. Leather is suitable for all types of weightlifting belts.

Suede leather is less durable than top-grain leather.

Custom leather weightlifting belts are heavy. This makes them rigid & durable.

What is the ideal width for a custom weightlifting belt?

It depends.

If it is for powerlifting, then the width has to be according to IPF rules. IPF stands for international powerlifting federation. IPF compliant weightlifting belts can have a maximum thickness of 4-inches.

This width is not necessary for recreational lifters or regular gym-goers. Bodybuilding belts are narrow from the front.

What is the thickness of a custom weightlifting belt?

The thickness of a custom weightlifting belt is 10 – 13 mm. It is important for the type of lift you want to do.

Usually, powerlifting belts are slightly thicker than regular weightlifting belts. This is because powerlifting is a competitive sport.

Thicker belts are stiff and maintain their shape. This makes them perfect for spinal support. Thicker belts help with the posture as well.

If a weightlifting belt is too thin. It will wear out quicker & won’t provide the support needed.

What are the advantages of a custom weightlifting belt?

There are many advantages to using a custom weightlifting belt. Some of which are explained below:

  • Raises abdominal pressure
  • Prevents hyperextension
  • Supports the spine
  • Restricts range of motion of the spine
  • Improves ability to lift heavy
  • Less stress on the lower spine
  • Improves posture
  • Comfortable

Raised abdominal pressure:

When you wear a weightlifting belt. It squeezes the abdominal muscles. Thereby, increasing the pressure on your abdomen (the intra-abdominal pressure).

Increased abdominal pressure cushions the front of the spine. Thus, decreasing the pressure exerted on it when a heavyweight is lifted.

Preventing hyperextension:

Normally there is a limit to the extension of a muscle. If a muscle is extended beyond its limit, there is a high chance of tearing or injury.

A custom weightlifting belt prevents this from happening. Especially, while lifting heavier weights or lifting overhead weights.

Spinal support:

A weightlifting belt provides support to the spine by stabilizing it. The shape of the spine is maintained while lifting and putting down the weights.

Restricted range of motion:

Custom weightlifting belts limit the range of motion of the lumbar spine(the lower back). This restricted range of motion is necessary.

It will prevent any accidental injuries to the spine.

Ability to lift heavy:

A custom weightlifting strap improves the ability to lift heavy. This is accomplished by keeping the spine & back muscles in a proper position.

Less spinal-stress:

The added support provided to the spine by the weightlifting belt decreases the stress on it.

Improved posture:

A custom leather weightlifting belt not only supports the spine. It also forces the user to keep the shoulders straight.

Thus, helping to maintain a good posture.

Weightlifting belts raise the user’s confidence. This is because they feel more comfortable & secure with a weightlifting belt on.
