The Leg Extension Exercise

A popular exercise in weight training, the leg extension works your quadriceps muscles. It’s quite specific, exclusively targeting your quads. That is why it shouldn’t be mistaken for a total leg workout like squats or deadlifts.

The following basic tips can help you make the most of leg extension benefits:

  • There’s no rush! Leg extensions are best done in slow, controlled movements, just like other isolation exercises. They’re not meant for intense, explosive movements, or half-doing them just for the sake of squeezing in more reps. Take it slow, and stay in control throughout all movements instead of only lifting and releasing the weight repeatedly.
  • Start with lighter weights and aim for more reps. Don’t rush your progression.
  • 10-15 reps are recommended for leg extensions. You’ll need to add weights as you progress but focus more on reps than weights. This will keep them somewhat lighter and therefore make you work out longer, making them more like a ‘pump and fatigue’ workout instead of a ‘progressive tension’ one.
